guide to life: university series

finally getting around to the second post in my...
you can read the first post, all about living on campus, 'here'...
now, todays topic:
MONEY!
in my dreams!
credit.

or more accuratley...
BEING BROKE!

yes that is how i describe myself veryyyyy often, as do all my friends here...
surprisingly (or maybe not so surprising really) i am broker now, in my forth year then i was when i started uni...
this is mainly due to the fact that i had a whole year to work and save before first year, and now i have to fit work around uni and other commitments...
and for the record i DO work!

now i do have to say that while i may describe myself as broke, i realise i am actually doing pretty well for myself...
i dont miss out on many opportunities and i know i am lucky in that respect...
but a girls allowed to exaggerate a little once in awhile and i think having only about $50 to get me through the next fortnight (aside from rent money) is not the easiest.

my tips for being broke:

- cheap movies
find out when your local cinema offers it cheapest tickets!
my friends and i pretty much live at the movies, but you will generally only find us there on cheap tuesday or other weekdays before 5, because that is when the tickets cost less!
also keep an eye out wherever you go frequently for loyalty cards...
my movies card has saved me plenty of money!
or you know just bring the cinema to you...
i love rewatching classic DVDs!

- dinner with friends
take it in turns with your friends to make dinners...
one night at yours and you cook...
the next at your friends and he/she cooks...
its more fun to cook for other people and usually cheaper to buy larger quanitities.

- plan your meals/freeze meals
similiar to the tip above, its generally cheaper to buy bigger quanitities so make a big batch of whatever is for dinner and then freeze the rest in takeaway containers...
it will also cut down your need to rely on takeaway as the freezer meals are super quick and easy.

- goon and predrinks
i still go out alot...
but i dont always spend money when im out...
i drink goon (yes that is cheap box wine!) at home with my friends BEFORE we go out...
that way i only need/want  to buy one or two drinks when im out.
cheap, nasty tequila shots before heading into town and trusty old goon is there too!

- cheap clothes/online shopping
there are so many things i want to buy right now but its all about prioritising and then finding super deals...
online shopping can be really helpful to find things you need at cheaper prices...
i love me an ebay buy!

share your tips about how to live on a budget in the comments below.

thanks for all the tips! the one thing i hate about being in college (besides studying and tests) is being broke! i always make sure to predrink before going out, definitely saves a lot of $$

Some friends of mine swap clothes as much as they can. It's harder for me to participate in this because all of my friends seem to be WAY shorter than me, but I do score a couple of cute new tops each season. And I'm trying to do better about freezer cooking and meal planning also. Thanks for sharing your tips!

awesome! great tips, I think the movie one is great for everyone at any stage in life but it's really reminiscent of when I was in college. Wednesdays were 1.50 movie night and so you would find EVERYONE at the local theatre during those days.

And i love the dinner club idea! I always want to do that but we have yet to implement it in my groups of friends.

Drinking wine before going out- yes and yes. Definitely do that and it certainly cuts down on cost!

I love that you said you have 50 dollars for a fortnight (ps i had to google what that meant). I remember sometimes in college I would litearlly have like 15 dollars to last me two weeks... somehow, it worked. hahah. so funny.

I save money now by grocery shopping as much as possible instead of buying to-go meals or takeout, I also shop much less and hit up cheap stores. I've also found that carrying cash (a certain amount) rather than my debit card works well too though I kind of forget that trick sometimes.
